Notwithstanding the creation of the Biofuels Task Force, and given that ethanol-based fuel is now sold at an increasing number of service stations in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory, I ask - (1) When this state is forecast to produce 12.8 million tonnes of grain this season and consistently has impressive production levels, why is Western Australia not a leader in biofuel production? (2) Will the Premier engage in talks with fuel companies based in Western Australia to discuss the prospects of converting bowsers to handle the sale of E5 and E10 fuel? Dr G.I. GALLOP

AnswerView source ↗

(1)-(2) As a government, we have expressed the view that the expansion of the ethanol industry and its incorporation into our energy supply for the transport industry has the support of the government. This matter is being handled by the Minister for Agriculture and Forestry in the other place, Hon Kim Chance. I know he has taken a lot of interest in this matter and how it might be progressed. I take on notice the member’s question and will get a detailed response to the issues he raised.
