A parliamentary question seeks clarification on conflicting statements regarding the Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) receipt of letters and videos related to an appeal. The Minister's response attempts to reconcile the discrepancies by stating the materials were with the Appeals Convenor, not the DEP, at the time of the initial inquiry.

In response to question on notice 1966 of 11 May 2000, the minister advised that - Both letters and the three videos which accompanied them were forwarded to the Appeals Convenor’s office to be considered with the appeal from the Chairperson of the Williamstown Residents Committee. This appeal was held on 10 January 2000. (1) In light of the above, can the minister explain why she wrote to the Chairperson of the Williamstown Residents Committee on 25 February and 6 April stating that no videos or letters had been received by the Department of Environmental Protection? (2) Can the minister advise when the letters and videos were received and forwarded to the DEP and why her letter of 25 February contradicts this? (3) What does the minister intend to do about this glaring contradiction? Hon PETER FOSS

(1)-(3) I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Minister for the Environment stated in her letters of 25 February and 6 April 2000 that the letters were not able to be located at the Department of Environmental Protection because that was the case at those times. The DEP was not provided with the letters and videos until 17 May 2000, which does not contradict the letter of 25 February 2000. As already explained in the response to question on notice 1966, the letters and videos were at the office of the Appeals Convenor.
