STUBBLE BURNING - NORTHERN AGRICULTURAL REGION
(1) Does the minister support the Department of Agriculture and Food’s agricultural memo from the northern agricultural region that states - Farmers may be surprised to learn of the implications of burning native vegetation, including fallen logs, when undertaking stubble burning. Changes to the clearing regulations in 2004 mean that if patches of vegetation are accidentally burnt, including isolated paddock trees closer than 50 metres to other trees or other native vegetation, it is defined as clearing, and as such, requires a permit from the Department of Environment. (2) Is this government policy? (3) How does one know before accidentally burning that one will accidentally burn? Hon KIM CHANCE

(1)-(3) I am not aware of the agricultural memo. The member’s question clearly applies to matters arising from the Environmental Protection Act. I, therefore, recommend that she ask that question of the Minister for the Environment.
