Fiona Stanley Hospital—Cardiac equipment
342. Ms Libby Mettam to
the Minister for Health:
I refer to the ageing
cardiac equipment at Fiona Stanley Hospital.
(1) Is it acceptable that the equipment used to
diagnose heart conditions and place stents and pacemakers is held together by
tape?
(2) Why has the minister not been able to secure
the necessary funding to replace this ageing equipment?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for the
question. I really want to be clear that in terms of the advice that we receive,
the equipment that is operating in our hospitals is safe. Our hospitals are
safe. They are providing high-quality care every day.
Ms Libby Mettam interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Vasse!
Ms Meredith Hammat: They are providing quality care
every day to the people of Western Australia. People should feel assured that that
is the case for all equipment right across the system. It is very undermining
of the opposition to come in here and suggest that that is not the case.
Ms Sandra Brewer interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Cottesloe, I am calling you
for the first time.
Mr Reece Whitby interjected.
The Speaker: Minister!
Ms Meredith Hammat: The member will be aware that this government has a fund to provide for the
replacement of equipment. That was announced in the state budget. That funding has
been committed and will ensure that we are able to upgrade equipment as it is
required, not just in Fiona Stanley Hospital but in all of our hospitals when
there is a need to do so.
