I refer to page 1157 of the 2006-2007 Budget papers, and in particular, the key efficiency indicators details a drop in the number of ‘policy projects that facilitate volunteering’ from 13 to 11. Could the Minister please explain why?

In 2006-07 the emphasis will be on expanding two key existing programs. These are the Volunteer Resource Centre Program and the Police Checks for Volunteers Program. In response to the recommendations of an external review, funding to the Volunteer Resource Centre Program will grow in 2006-2007 from $357,500 to $400,000. In addition, there will be considerable staff investment in moving volunteer resource centres from one off grant agreements on to three year service agreements. This will provide greater certainty to the funded services and their staff, and ensure that they are able to plan ahead more than 12 months at a time. The Police Checks project has received additional funding of $70,000. This funding will be allocated to the provision of a free Police Check for volunteers who are also required to have a Working with Children Check.
