WORKING
WITH CHILDREN (CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKING) ACT 2004 — REVIEW
501. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the
Minister for Child Protection:
I refer to the review of the Working with Children (Criminal
Record Checking) Act 2004 that was completed in September 2012.
(1) Of the 23 recommendations in
that review —
(a) which recommendations have been
accepted and implemented;
(b) which recommendations are yet to
be actioned; and
(c) have any of
the recommendations not been accepted; and, if so, which ones and for what
reasons?
(2) Is further
funding needed to implement any of the 23 recommendations; and, if so, how much
funding is attached to each recommendation requiring funding?
(3) When can we
expect a bill to be brought before Parliament to amend the Working with
Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1)(a)–(c)
Recommendations 4, 6 and 23 have been implemented. Recommendation 1 will be
addressed after the report of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses
to Child Sexual Abuse has been received and considered. Recommendations 12, 17
and 18 have been considered in accordance with the review and it has been
determined that the current legislation or proposed amendments are sufficient
to address the issues raised. Recommendations 5, 9, 14, 20 and 21 are generally
administrative and have been addressed to the extent possible, with further
progress dependent on legislative change or national developments.
