ROAD SAFETY — ALBANY HIGHWAY
712. Mr P.J. RUNDLE to the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the recent road safety
summit identifying fatigue as a leading factor in road fatalities and injuries.
(1) Why has Main Roads closed and blocked off up to six
parking bays on Albany Highway between Beaufort River and Albany?
(2) Does Main Roads believe that fatigue occurs only
near the Cranbrook truck stop and not for 100 kilometres either way?
(3) Does Main Roads disagree with
what the Premier said in the first question—''do not drive tired''?

(1)–(3) I
have to say that I find that a ridiculous and offensive question. Trying to
play politics with road safety to that
degree is very ugly. Currently, families are going through the worst pain
possible over what happened this weekend. They are going through absolute
pain. To come in and play politics with rest stops on Albany Highway is a disgrace. The Main Roads that the member wants to
kick every time in this place is the same Main Roads that has helped this
government roll out the biggest road safety improvements in the state's
history. I caution the member about playing politics on this front. We are
rolling out over 9 000 kilometres of road safety improvements along Albany
Highway. That is hundreds of kilometres of road safety improvements. We have
added passing lanes, and we continue to widen the roads, improve the shoulders and install audible edge and centre
lines. These are works that the opposition never did. If the member
wants to come here and try to play politics with road spending and roadworks,
we will go through the opposition's record versus ours.
We
have injected over $100 million in new rest stops across the state to ensure
that truck drivers have safer places to go. By caution, members, as I have
said, there are families from the member for Darling Range's electorate
and the member for Armadale's electorate who are currently going
through the worst possible grief and pain that we could ever imagine. To come
in here and play politics and try to point to a particular matter as causing
what happened on the weekend is, I think, a disgraceful and distasteful
question today, and I caution the member.
