I refer the Premier to the election of Carmen Lawrence to the federal presidency of the Australian Labor Party. In light of Ms Lawrence’s opposition - Ms M.M. Quirk: It is Dr Lawrence. The SPEAKER: Order, member! Ms S.E. WALKER: In light of Ms Lawrence’s opposition to the sea-swap program with the US Navy, which has the potential to damage Western Australia’s economy; in light of her comments that illegal immigrants who arrive in Australia should be housed in taxpayer-funded hostels; in light of her conduct, which has been described as a disgraceful abuse of power, with regard to the Penny Easton affair; and in light of her apparent inability to recall important events, does the Premier support the views and actions of the new head of his political party on these matters? Dr G.I. GALLOP

I always get a sense of satisfaction when a Western Australian achieves something on the national political stage. I always get a sense of satisfaction whether the person is from the Liberal, National or Labor Parties. My views on the range of subjects that the member mentioned are very well known. I intend to pursue my views about what is in the public interest of Western Australia with great vigour both within the framework of the Australian Labor Party and within the debates that will occur in Western Australia in the lead up to the next election.
