FORCED ADOPTIONS
1416. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to the response to my
question without notice asked on 22 October 2024 in which the Minister for
Health stated that no records of Louise Kirk's admission could be
located.
(1) Is the
minister aware that other participants in the inquiry into past forced adoptive
policies and practices have been able to obtain their medical records from King
Edward Memorial Hospital for Women?
(2) Further to
(1), is the minister aware that some of those records date back to
approximately a decade earlier than Louise's admission to the hospital?
(3) Is the
minister aware that some of these women were also stonewalled in the first
instance but that after much persistence some of their records were eventually
located in a warehouse facility in Belmont?
(4) Can the
minister confirm that this warehouse facility was also searched when attempting
to locate Louise's medical records?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided by the
Minister for Health.
(1)–(3) As
was advised in Legislative Council question without notice 1267, legislative
requirements at that time did not necessitate one-off records to be kept for
longer than seven years.
(4) Health
service providers in Western Australia have multiple offsite storage facilities
where medical records are stored. King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women
maintains a database detailing medical records stored offsite. Unfortunately,
there is no record of Ms Kirk's medical record being stored at an
offsite facility.
