HOSPITALS —
SAFETY
608. Mr Z.R.F. KIRKUP to the Premier:
I
have a supplementary question. How much longer do hardworking nurses and
doctors have to wait to receive this protection in our hospitals, given
that the minister has already been bogged down in talkfests for the last two
and a half years on this issue?

AnswerView source ↗

The Minister for Health brought
various parties together—nurses, health professionals and the like—to
a summit in late June to hear their concerns. I do not think that is something
the member should be criticising. I think most people in the hospital system
would welcome the fact that a minister was prepared to do that. As a consequence
of that, we have done a range of additional things. For instance, there was the
announcement on the weekend of another $5 million. If the member wants to
criticise that, he can criticise it, but it is a significant investment and an
addition to whatever was there when the opposition was in office. We have also
put in place duress alarms and stab-proof vests, delivering on an election
commitment.
