DR LUKE NEIL — SUNSET BEACH ASSAULT 625. Hon BRIAN ELLIS to the minister representing the Minister for Health: I refer to the minister’s response to my question yesterday in which he referred me to his comments during debate on a motion in the Legislative Assembly on 11 June 2008. (1) In addition to the minister’s selective reference to some aspects of the treating doctor’s signed medical report, did the treating doctor also state in that report that the injuries to Dr Luke Neil may have been life threatening if he did not receive urgent medical treatment? (2) Did the minister state during debate on the motion that there had been no application or request from Dr Neil for reimbursement of the cost of the charter plane? (3) If yes to (2), given that the WA Country Health Service reportedly stated that it was making a repeat offer of reimbursement, did the minister mislead the house, or did the WA Country Health Service mislead The West Australian newspaper? (4) Given that the following issues raised in my question yesterday were not addressed in the minister’s comments on the motion, if the WA Country Health Service did not mislead the newspaper — (a) who made the first offer, under what circumstances, and to whom; (b) was this an offer to pay the equivalent of a couple of hundred dollars for a seat on a delayed commercial flight or the $1 500 cost of the immediate private charter; and (c) if it was not the cost of the charter flight, will the minister reconsider; and, if not, why not? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of the question. (1) No. (2) Hansard records what the minister said and is there for the member to read. (3) No. The media statement released by the WA Country Health Service chief executive officer on Friday, 6 June 2008 stated that the WACHS would be in contact with the family to repeat its offer to recompense it to the value of the commercial flight. (4) (a) Mr Neil was provided with a patient assisted travel scheme form prior to his discharge from Geraldton Regional Hospital to claim his commercial flight reimbursement by the nurse on duty—the WACHS CEO has subsequently repeated this offer; (b) the offer was made to reimburse the cost of a commercial airfare; and (c) there is no eligibility under current guidelines for payment of this nature to be made.
