AUSTRALIAN GREYHOUND RACING ASSOCIATION — PREMIER'S COMMENTS
641. Mr W.J. JOHNSTON to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. The Premier has outlined an
interesting issue for the horseracing industry, so why did he agree in February
2010 to the briefing note stating that there was an expectation that the
facility at Cannington would be built but then talk about horseracing in answer
to my question?

The three codes have an interrelationship, not the least of
which is through the TAB.
Mr P.B. Watson interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Albany!
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
The lease for the facility at Cannington will run out in June next year. The
greyhound racing industry sought the permission of the minister —
Mr W.J. Johnston :
And you.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Yes, and me. It sought permission to lease some land behind the existing
facility for the future development of a greyhound track. The industry
approached the government and the government, through the minister and I, said
yes, recognising that for a period the industry would probably have to use the
facility near Mandurah. If the member had listened to what the minister said,
he would know that the government has approved the development on the new site.
Is he not even up to that? It has been approved and the industry will build a
facility, but maybe not to its full expectations. I do not know when it will
start; the member should ask the minister a question. However, it will build a
facility on the land that we agreed it could lease, so the member's
whole question is irrelevant.
