HYDROGEN POWER PLANT — QUEENSLAND
586. Dr D.J. HONEY to the Minister for State Development,
Jobs and Trade:
I refer to the fact that Andrew
Forrest has decided to develop green hydrogen in Queensland over his home state
of WA.
(1) Is the
minister aware that the New South Wales government has just announced a $3 billion
incentive package to attract $80 billion in green hydrogen investment, again with
Andrew Forrest?
(2) Can the
minister tell us whether there will be a similar hydrogen announcement in Western
Australia in the next couple of days or weeks, or has the minister and his
government completely and utterly dropped the ball in the hydrogen race?

(1)–(2) I
would like to thank the member for the question. Obviously, hydrogen and green
energy is the future for Western Australia. Western
Australia will become a green energy powerhouse for the South-East Asian community. We are working with a range of proponents and interests right across
the state to unleash and realise the
potential of hydrogen energy into the future. We already have our $90 million
on the table as part of our industry support package; we have an
abundance of natural advantage over other state jurisdictions; and, sure, although billions of Western Australian
dollars have gone to the New South Wales economy to assist it during its
COVID-19 outbreak, we continue to make sure that we have ample funds available
as part of our hydrogen development strategies. We have a Minister for Hydrogen
Industry who, as everyone in this place would know, is working tirelessly on
this particular process. We are far ahead of New South Wales with renewable
hydrogen development. We released our hydrogen strategy two years ago and have been active in dealing with a range of industry
players looking to develop local hydrogen projects. A large number of potential projects are progressing in
WA, and I answered this question yesterday. As I mentioned, more than 30
are under consideration at the moment. Some of the biggest renewable projects
in the world are being planned for Western Australia,
including the major green energy hub in the south east of the state ,
which has the potential to be the biggest renewable energy project in the
world. Western Australia is a leading jurisdiction, if not in Australia, in the
world, in developing our green hydrogen potential.
