(1) Is the Department monitoring honey possum populations in this area?
(2) What is the current status of the honey possum population, and spread of the species in the area?
(3) Has there been a reduction in honey possum population in the area?
(4) Does the Department monitor the impact of mining activity on the honey possum?
(5) If yes to (4), how is mining activity impacting on the honey possum population around Higginsville?
(6) What, if any, programs are in place for the protection of the honey possum in the highlighted area?

(2) - (3) The honey possum occurs across the south-west of Western Australia from Kalbarri National Park to east of Esperance and is not considered to be a threatened species. Its status and distribution in the area in question are not known.
(4) No. The monitoring of mining impacts on wildlife is normally the responsibility of the mining company and, where deemed necessary, is specified through conditions of approval to mine.
(5) Not applicable
(6) The honey possum is protected under the
Wildlife
Conservation Act 1950
