HEDLAND SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL — SAFETY ISSUES
930. Mr
P.J. RUNDLE to the Premier:
I refer to reports that a roof
collapsed at Hedland Senior High School in South Hedland. As the Premier knows,
Port Hedland is the powerhouse of the Western Australian economy and the source
of much income for the state government.
The Premier has had four years to
address the major safety issues, leaving staff and students at risk. When will
he commit to rebuilding the school instead of these patch-up jobs?

I understand that there was some
trouble with one of the ceilings in one of the buildings at Hedland Senior High
School. I am trying to recall the exact details, but it may well have been in
the gym. From memory, it was on an occasion when students were not present and
repair work was being done. The government has allocated—from memory, again—$18 million for significant
improvements to Hedland high school, which is a very significant amount of money. That builds on our $40 million for a new
Roebourne high school and around $20 million or thereabouts —maybe
$25 million—to expand Karratha Senior High School. In addition, as
members know, there is funding for a new
hospital in Newman, a new marina in Hedland, the Karratha–Tom Price
Road and the list goes on across the Pilbara. Obviously, this government
has made a significant investment in Hedland high school, which, I am sure,
will continue to ensure that the students of Hedland receive the very best of
education.
