Question seeks details on the contract with Pitcher Partners for managing the Rottnest Hotel, including terms, duration, cost, and funding requests. The Minister deflects, stating the Rottnest Island Authority manages the contract and avoids providing specific details, instead focusing on the broader financial strategy for Rottnest Island.

I refer the minister to his media release announcing the appointment of insolvency experts, Pitcher Partners, to assist the Rottnest Island Authority in managing the Rottnest Hotel following the minister’s decision to abandon redevelopment of the hotel. (1) What are the terms of the contract with Pitcher Partners and for how long is the contract expected to run? (2) What is the expected total cost of the contract and has the Rottnest Island Authority approached either the minister or the Department of Treasury and Finance for additional funds to meet the additional cost? Mr R.C. KUCERA

(1)-(2) The appointment of Pitcher Partners is a matter for the management group of the Rottnest Island Authority. I am not aware of the full terms of the agreement that has been reached with Pitcher Partners, other than that as at 1 April the current management group there is due to cease operations. It was therefore essential that the Rottnest Island Authority implement a proper management regime for the hotel. However, I will say that because of the nature of the group that has been put there, the Rottnest Island Authority for the first time will be given a clear picture of the financial flow of the entire hotel establishment there, which will be essential to any future development that occurs in that part of Thomson Bay. I make no apology for the fact that we are now moving forward to put the island on a financial footing; to do what the Auditor General told us - not asked us - to do; and to make sure that there is a proper financial analysis and business plan for a clear direction forward, not the airy-fairy nonsense that the Leader of the Opposition came up with yesterday. The task force will report to me on that management plan at the end of April. I repeat: in the meantime, Rottnest is a magnificent place to go for holidays, it is business as usual and the island is just as wonderful a place to visit as it ever was. I will not listen to the negativities from the other side of the House. We will get on with the job of making the island financial.
