I refer to the application for a liquor licence for the roadhouse on the Northern Territory side of the Western Australia-Northern Territory border not far from Kununurra, which is being opposed by the police, including the Kununurra police, and various community groups. What steps has the minister taken to oppose the granting of this liquor licence to avoid the risks that such a liquor licence represents to the local and neighbouring communities? Hon N.F. MOORE

I outline two things: First, I have taken no action as this is the first time I have been made aware of the matter; and, second, the Minister for Racing and Gaming does not grant licences. The quicker the Leader of the Opposition learns about some of these things, the better. If the Leader of the Opposition has a problem, he should do what he does frequently; namely, get on the telephone and say, "Minister, there is a problem in respect of a licence." Hon Tom Stephens: It is in your electorate! Hon N.F. MOORE: Does the member want some help, or what? Is he making a suggestion or trying to score some silly points? If the Leader of the Opposition wants the Minister for Racing and Gaming to see whether he can do something about it - bearing in mind that he does not grant or reject licences, as there is a process, as the colleague sitting next to the Leader of the Opposition can tell him – he must understand that the matter is properly outside the control of the minister. If the Leader of the Opposition thinks that arrangement should be changed, he should put it in his policy for the next election. If the member wants me to provide some assistance in this matter, he need only write me a letter or ring up to receive the appropriate response.
