The Salaries and Allowances Act (Section 11A) provides that the Treasurer may make arrangements under which travel expenses of Members of Parliament shall be payable by the Treasurer. These arrangements were first made by the then Premier in 1980 and have been varied on a number of occasions. The guidelines established on its inception provided that the system be administered by the Premier and the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. The Salaries and Allowances Tribunal and the Department of the Premier and Cabinet are currently undertaking a joint review of all current travel entitlements with a view to removing anomalies and increasing accountability.
