SOLAR
SCHOOLS PROGRAM
312. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Minister for Energy:
I refer to the
WA Solar Schools program.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that the program was cancelled last Friday, 18 May 2012,
despite the program guidelines on the Public Utilities Office website advising
that the program was expected to run until June 2012?
(2) How many
applications pending during the period of transition between the former Office
of Energy and the Public Utilities Office will now not be processed?
(3) How many
applications from schools, brokered through the promoters of the Western
Australian Solar Schools program, will not be lodged, given the premature
cancellation of the program?

I thank the honourable member for some
notice of this question.
(1) The
closure of the program is consistent with the longstanding budget position of
the program's funding, ending this financial year.
(2)–(3)
The Department of Finance's Public Utilities Office has ceased granting
approvals to schools to award contracts. The 49 authorisations to schools to
enter contracts will be honoured. These arrangements will see the program
operate until 30 June 2012. At the time of the announcement, 93 registered
schools had either not sought approval to enter a contract, or had not been
approved to enter a contract. Of the 93 schools, 79 have been registered or
have applied to register, and 14 applications were awaiting approval to award a
contract.
