During the adjournment of this House on Tuesday, 21 May, I advised the House that the Department of Treasury and Finance was advising ratepayers of new land tax assessments based on legislation yet to pass both Houses of this Parliament. Will the minister explain why the Deputy Premier has issued a letter to accompany a brochure from the department that refers to legislative changes that are yet to occur? Hon TOM STEPHENS

The Deputy Premier has provided the following reply. The Land Tax Assessment Bill 2001 currently before the Parliament is part of the taxation administration package of Bills. The Taxation Administration Bill 2001 amalgamates and standardises the administrative provisions of payroll tax, stamp duty, land tax and debits tax into a single Act. The Taxation Administration (Consequential Provisions) Bill 2001 repeals six Acts, including the Land Tax Assessment Act 1976, which has been rewritten as a consequence of the other associated Bills. The Land Tax Assessment Bill 2001 merely replicates the existing provisions contained in the Land Tax Assessment Act 1976.
