DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT —
HILLARYS BOAT HARBOUR
1114. Hon
MARTIN PRITCHARD to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the
Department of Transport's responsibility for Hillarys Boat Harbour.
(1) There is signage prohibiting people from
jumping off the footbridge but no clear signage prohibiting jumping off the
jetty. What is the Department of Transport's policy on visitors jumping
off the jetty? If it is prohibited, will more signage be put in place to
reflect this?
(2) What is the status of the Department of
Transport's review of emergency management procedures at Hillarys Boat
Harbour following the drowning death of a young man on 3 April 2016?
(3) Has the Department of Transport
undertaken to provide —
(a) public rescue equipment;
(b) better training to security staff to deal
with water rescues and drowning accidents; and
(c) better public access to first-aid
equipment, including defibrillators?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. The Department of Transport
advises —
(1) The Sorrento Quay boardwalk footbridge is
not intended for the public to use to jump into the water. Diving off the east
side of the jetty is not prohibited.
(2) The Department of Transport is currently
reviewing its emergency management procedures.
(3) (a) The Department of Transport is
purchasing lifebuoys and lifebuoy stands and increasing the number of ladders
on the east side of the jetty.
(b) All security guards hold senior first-aid
certificates.
(c) The Department of Transport is purchasing
additional automated external defibrillators to install in accessible locations
at the harbour.
