With regard to Budget Estimates 2003-04 one of the Water and Rivers Commission’s major achievements for 2002-03 was to ‘assist the community in improving rivers and estuaries through preparation of river action plans, catchment management plans and regional strategies, development and provision of technical advice for waterways restoration and support the community in understanding and monitoring rivers and estuaries’ through partnerships (p641, Budget Paper No. 2) -
(1) Who are the ‘partners’ that the WRC is working in conjunction with on this initiative?
(2) Do these other partners contribute funding to this initiative?
(3) If yes to (2), please provide details?

(1) The Water and Rivers Commission (WRC) works with property owners/landholders, local government, state government agencies, farmers, catchment and community groups, industry, non-government organisations such as Greening Australia and World Wide Fund for Nature, indigenous groups, universities and the regional Natural Resource Management groups. The combination of partners varies with each region and with each waterway within the state and with each issue that is being addressed. This variation results from different waterway characteristics, population dynamics and ease of being involved (ie, distance have to travel). (2) Usually through accessing funding for on-ground activities through funding programs such as NHT, by making a direct contribution to the activities (eg, local government), through strategic planning directions (such as Statement of Planning Policies, Planning documents and regional strategies), partnering with WRC to run river restoration workshops and community effort and will to achieve a better environment. (3) This information is not held by WRC as the funding and inkind support comes from a large number of stakeholders and sources.
