REMOTE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES — CLOSURES —
WESTERN AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL ADVISORY COUNCIL
1309. Hon AMBER-JADE SANDERSON to the
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs:
I refer to last week's
debate regarding the government's intention to close remote Aboriginal
communities, and the minister's comment that he meets with the Western
Australian Aboriginal Advisory Council regularly.
(1) Did the
minister discuss with WAAAC the Barnett government's intention to close
remote Aboriginal communities prior to the Premier making the announcement to
do so?
(2) Has the WAAAC
been given the opportunity to provide advice regarding the Barnett government's
decision to close remote Aboriginal communities?
(3) If yes to
(2), did the WAAAC support the government's announced intention to
close remote Aboriginal communities?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1)–(3) No
formal decision has been made to close any of Western Australia's
remote communities. The Western Australian Aboriginal Advisory Council will be
consulted as part of the broad consultation process following the commonwealth
government's decision to withdraw funding to remote communities.
Through the Aboriginal Affairs Coordinating Committee, representatives of the
Western Australian Aboriginal Advisory Council have been involved in broad
ongoing consultation regarding investment in remote Aboriginal communities.
