(a) From 1 to 23 December 2010 inclusive, there were 483 patients admitted from the elective surgery waiting list, after waiting longer than the clinically recommended time for their category of surgery.
(i) The 483 patients referred to in (a) had the following surgical specialities:
Orthopaedic Surgery: 105
Urology: 77
General Surgery: 68
Plastic Surgery: 57
Ophthalmology: 50
Ear, Nose & Throat: 40
Paediatric Surgery: 19
Cardiology: 17
Gynaecology: 9
Neurosurgery: 9
Vascular Surgery: 9
Cardiothoracic Surgery: 5
Gastroenterology: 5
Other: 13
(b) Of these long wait patients, 6 waited 500 days or more before they were admitted for their surgery. In the interest of patient confidentiality the longest time an individual waited for elective surgery is suppressed, the supplied range prevents the identification of an individual patient.
(c) As at 23 December 2010, the Department of Health paid for 27 patients to have surgery undertaken in a private hospital.
(i) Hernia repair, fundoplication, excision of skin lesion, reconstruction of breast, total arthoplasty of knee/hip, shoulder repair, carpal tunnel, and lateral column procedure right elbow. For confidentiality reasons generic details of the procedures have been used.
(d) As at 23 December 2010, for 16 of the 27 patients there was no additional average cost. For 11 of the 27 public patients, additional costs were incurred due to their clinical needs. The average additional cost for each of these 11 patients was $4,213.57.
