Cool the Schools—Air conditioning
32. Mr Liam Staltari to
the Minister for Education:
I refer to
revelations that the government delivered just three of its 45 promised Cool the
Schools air-conditioning upgrades last year. Why has the government funded less
than half of the full aircon program in its budget, while funding every single
dollar of its Burswood racetrack?

I thank the member
for the question because it gives me the opportunity to explain to this house
how it is this government that actually prioritises the learning environment
for students and teachers in our schools. Let us be clear that it is only this
side that made an election commitment to what is a critically important thing
to many students and teachers throughout the state. Less than a year ago, members
opposite had no interest in this issue at all. They had no interest as a party
at all. We need to get that clearly on the record. Members, it is only this
government that took to the election a commitment to upgrade 45 schools—much-needed
upgrades—at a cost of over $80 million in this term of government. We will
deliver on our election commitment. Let us be clear on that. We will deliver on
our election commitments.
I also need to set
the scene in terms of what we inherited when we are talking about some 835
schools across the state. What is not well known by many people—it
should be by the opposition—is that prior to 2019, no reverse-cycle air
conditioners were put into our schools. Under the previous government—

interjected.
The Speaker: Members of the opposition!
Ms Sabine Winton: Under the previous government, all
brand-new schools that were opened got evaporative air conditioners. That is
all that they were entitled to. I am happy to say we corrected that policy and
that every brand-new school build and every major upgrade in this state in the
time that we have been in government has received reverse-cycle air
conditioning. I am very proud of that record, but there is a legacy of work to
be done, and that is what this election commitment is about. There were
crickets from the opposition a year ago about this being an important issue. It
is this government that has prioritised it and, in this term of government, we
will deliver on our election commitment to much-needed air conditioner upgrades
to those 45 schools. I know that the community supports that.
