The Minister Replied:
It is understood a working group consisting of Ms Deidre Willmott (Premier and Cabinet), Mr Langoulant (Treasury) and officers from Education are examining the agency responsibility for School Crossing Wardens.
The Police Service does not view the School Crossing function as core business of the Agency. Whilst the Police Service fully supports all initiatives to find safer routes to school, the safe passage of school aged pedestrians from their homes to school is not the sole responsibility of police. The community, and in particular parents, have a shared responsibility in this regard.
Accordingly, the Police Service has submitted Draft Cabinet Submissions in recent times, concerning the transfer of this function.
