SHENTON PARK CAMPUS REHABILITATION ENGINEERING CLINIC - TOILETING SYSTEM
(1) Would the minister confirm, as indicated in answer to question without notice 176 in 2006, that on 2 June 2006 tests were conducted at the Shenton Park Campus Rehabilitation Engineering Clinic to test the toileting system for the motorised wheelchair belonging to Monica McGhie and whether the tests were successful? (2) If so, when will the completed chair be available? (3) If the tests were not successful, could the minister advise what alternative can be offered to Monica? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) Tests were conducted on 2 June 2006 as part of the development of the design to determine the initial viability of the system. The test provided data that will be used for furthering the design of the system to fit what is already a complex custom-built wheelchair. The proof of concept at this stage of the design is promising. (2) This is yet to be determined. The Rehabilitation Engineering Clinic has to undertake further development of the design. The difficulty in adapting the proof of concept to work in practice in a sensitive social situation without a significant rebuild of the current wheelchair is being progressed. (3) The proof of concept at this stage of the design is promising. Until the success of the final design can be determined, Ms McGhie’s needs will be met via carer support.
