With regard to question 1192, asked by Hon Robin Chapple on Friday 22 August 2003 about the building known as the ‘Castle’ on Barrow Island which was demolished prior to 2003, I ask -
(1) Is the Minister aware that this building contained substantial quantities of asbestos?
(2) Was the demolition and disposal of those building materials carried out under any form of licence?
(3) Will the Minister explain where the building materials were taken after the demolition?
(4) Was an investigation carried out in line with the answer to question 1192 as above?
(5) If yes to (4), will you provide the answer?
(6) If no to (4), why not?

(2) The Department issued a Permit to Remove Controlled Wastes for the period 21 December 2001 to 21 March 2002. The permit allowed for up to 30 tons of asbestos materials to be removed from the Barrow Island Facility and disposed at an approved Class II landfill in Karatha. (3) The material was disposed in the hazardous waste section of the Seven Mile Landfill, an approved Class II landfill within the Shire of Roebourne. Written approval was granted by the Shire's Environmental Health Officer for disposal of material on 3 January 2002 and 10 January 2002 for two sea containers carrying approximately 8 tonnes of material each. (4) Yes. (5) Yes. Refer to answers two and three. (6) Not Applicable.
