(1) The previous Government announced its commitment to the South Hedland Town Centre revitalisation in August 2008 as part of the Labor Party's 2008 election campaign.
On coming into Government I reviewed the proposal and requested LandCorp proceed with the South Hedland town centre development plan as part of the then new Liberal-National Government's commitment to the Pilbara. As early as March 2009 I was able to announce the Government's $23m commitment, via the Royalties for Regions program to the project and set out the implementation timeframe for streetscaping and road improvements works commencing in mid 2009 and the first englobo lots to be offered to developers in early 2010.
This Government has stuck to these timeframes and in early February this year, as part of my recent visit to South Hedland, I invited major developers to join the Government in delivering its Pilbara Cities initiative to transform South Hedland. Developers have been invited to submit an Expression of Interest to develop a 1.5 hectare landmark site to begin to transform the town centre.
As the Member for the Pilbara will appreciate, the revitalisation of South Hedland will bring enormous benefits for the community and become a blueprint for the revitalisation of other regional towns.
