Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery Centre — ROAD building material excavation
I refer to Main Roads Western Australia’s proposal to investigate the mining of raw material within the area of the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery Centre. Shark Bay is one of 20 places on the planet, along with the Great Barrier Reef—one of two in Australia—that satisfy all four natural criteria for World Heritage Listing. (1) How does this proposal comply with the World Heritage Listing? (2) What other areas outside the World Heritage Listing area has Main Roads WA considered for raw material mining in the Shark Bay region? Hon SIMON O’BRIEN

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) Main Roads WA is seeking to access extensions of existing pits within and adjacent to the Shark Bay World Heritage area for road building materials. Main Roads WA is working, through the Department of Environment and Conservation, to ensure compliance with the Shark Bay World Heritage area requirements. (2) There is a scarcity of suitable road building materials in the Shark Bay region. The Main Roads WA proposal includes material sources within and outside the heritage area at strategic locations for roads that service the Shark Bay area, including the heritage area. Excluding sites from within the heritage area would result in prohibitive costs in carting materials long distances.
