JAKARTA TRADE OFFICE
1340. Hon KATE DOUST to the Leader of the
House representing the Premier:
I refer to the recent announcement by the state government to close the
Jakarta trade office.
(1) Why has the state government decided to close the office?
(2) Who did the government consult with regarding the closure of the
trade office?
(3) How much money will the government save as a result of the closure?
(4) What are the current arrangements with the Australian Trade
Commission regarding —
(a) the cost of establishing and maintaining
a new office within the Jakarta office of the Australian Trade Commission; and
(b) the cost of employing a full-time worker
within the Jakarta office of the Australian Trade Commission?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question.
(1) The current regional director's
contract term expires on 31 December 2014. The future of our representation in
Indonesia is being examined. One option is for an embedded full-time Western
Australian trade officer to be located in the Austrade office in the Australian
embassy in Jakarta.
(2) The Department of State Development has
consulted with the Indonesian Consul General, the Australian Ambassador to
Indonesia, the Australia Indonesia Business Council, Austrade, the Department
of Agriculture and Food WA and Tourism WA.
(3)–(4) Not
applicable.
