EARLY
YEARS EDUCATION — POLICY STATEMENT
427. Hon LINDA
SAVAGE to the minister representing the Minister for Education:
I refer to the minister's press release of 23
December 2010 as she released a review into educational practice in early
childhood conducted by Professor Collette Tayler, and her statement that over
the next few months, the state government will develop a full policy statement
on teaching and learning in the early years, incorporating some of Professor
Tayler's findings.
(1) Has the
state government developed a full policy statement on teaching and learning in
the early years; and, if so, has it been released and will the minister table a
copy of it?
(2) If the
state government has not developed a full policy statement on teaching and
learning in the early years, why not, and when is it likely to do so?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1) Yes. In
September 2011, the director general released ''The early years of
schooling''. This statement will help school leaders and early childhood
teachers with clear expectations about curriculum, pedagogies and assessment.
(2) This document
has been distributed to all schools and is available on the Department of
Education's website.
