(1) Yes, the Western Australian Department of Health keeps inpatient records on each person admitted to a hospital in Western Australia including all those admitted due to an injury sustained in a boating incident/accident.
(2) Unit record data is recorded for each admission including primary and additional diagnoses, external cause codes and any procedures performed. From these records the Department of Health can determine the number of separations due to an injury sustained in a boating incident/accident and the number of people this corresponds to.
(3) The number of hospital separations due to injury
1
sustained in a boating incident/accident
2
for the last three calendar years are as follows
3
;
2008 - 129
2009 - 153
2010
4
- 95
This corresponds to the following number of patients
5
;
2008 - 108
2009 - 138
2010 - 83
Notes:
1 - Selection of cases with injuries was based on an ICD-10-AM diagnosis code of S or T (injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes) in any diagnosis field.
2 - Boating incidents/accidents were selected using external cause codes indicating accidents involving merchant ships, passenger ships, fishing boats, sailboats, inflatable craft (non-powered) and unspecified watercraft.
3 - Each patient may be admitted more than once and therefore have multiple separations.
4 - 2010 data coding completeness for Western Australian hospitals was estimated to be 99% at time of extraction. Some data was missing for private hospitals. It is estimated this could change total separations for 2010 by around 1%.
5 - Each patient has been counted once within each calendar year but may be present in multiple calendar years.
