NET ZERO EMISSIONS —
2050 TARGET
447. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the minister representing the
Minister for Climate Action:
I refer to the 2019 WA Labor
platform , which states that, in government, WA Labor will —
Develop
a measurable, practical pathway to carbon pollution reduction designed to get
to net zero emissions by 2050.
(1) Given this
measurable, practical pathway is not contained in the Western Australian
climate policy , will the minister please table it?
(2) If the
pathway has not yet been developed, will the minister please provide an update
on the progress of this commitment?
(3) Is the pathway consistent with the findings and
recommendations of the recently released Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change report?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer is provided on behalf of the
Minister for Climate Action.
(1)–(3) The Western Australian climate policy outlines several measures that will
develop pathways to net zero emissions.
These include, but are not limited to: whole-of-system planning for the south
west interconnected system, which
will include scenarios for renewable energy and storage penetration consistent
with national and state emissions reduction goals; state government
agencies, including government trading enterprises, developing and implementing plans to transition toward net zero
emissions by 2050; and sectoral emissions reductions strategies
evaluating opportunities or cost-effective abatement across Western Australia's
key economic sectors and developing strategies to guide emissions reduction.
Each of the above streams of work are currently in progress and further updates
will be provided in due course.
