STATE ECONOMY
136. Dr M.D. NAHAN to the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's
interview with Jacob Kagi on the ABC on Sunday when he stated —
The domestic economy is growing for
the first time in five or six years. We've got job growth back in the
market.
Why is the Premier deliberately
misleading the people of Western Australia? As measured by the Australian
Bureau of Statistics, state final demand has gone backwards for four
consecutive quarters and WA has the highest unemployment rate in 17 years.

I did an interview with Jacob Kagi
and it appeared on Sunday evening. I note that the Leader of the Opposition did
an interview with him as well that appeared on Saturday evening. I might talk
about that in a moment!
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr M. McGOWAN : It is the
case, as I indicated yesterday, that in the first two years of my government,
more than 32 000 jobs have been created in Western Australia. In the last two
years of the last government 25 000 jobs were lost.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition!
Mr M. McGOWAN : The economy
was in serious recession during the term of the last government.
Dr M.D. Nahan : We are in a serious
recession.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Mr Speaker —
The SPEAKER : Leader of the Opposition, I call you to
order for the first time. I have warned you three times.
Mr M. McGOWAN : That is the
fact of the matter. The fact is also that this government has to deal with a pretty severe legacy of debt and deficit that was
left to us by members opposite. Government these days is not as easy as it was when members opposite were elected. This government is creating jobs,
getting the finances under control —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr
M. McGOWAN : — securing
funding from the commonwealth and it has got the economy growing once again.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, when you asked your question, you said ''deliberately
misleading''. You cannot say ''deliberately misleading'';
you can say ''misleading''.
