(1) 2000/2001 $2 070 000 The above is the budgeted allocation to provide both routine and acute dental services in the North West. The Government has committed an additional $7.6 million on a recurrent basis to oral health services in this State as from this financial year. While planning for investment of these additional funds is not completed, some of this allocation will be invested in initiatives in rural and remote communities, and specifically in the North West. Budget allocation for the years 2001/02 to 2004/05 have not currently been determined. (2) Acute dental services are provided by Government dental clinics in Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Kununurra, South Hedland, Karratha, Exmouth, Carnarvon, Newman and Tom Price/Paraburdoo. Additionally, private dental practitioners provide services to eligible patients through the Country Patients' Dental Subsidy Scheme in Kununurra, Wyndham, Broome and Carnarvon. A visiting service is also provided to 25 other communities in the North West. It is proposed to locate major items of dental equipment at some of the larger communities to reduce the amount of equipment needed to be taken on visiting trips. This will enhance the possibility of dental staff accessing Royal Flying Doctors Service services to communities and also allow for easier vehicular access to communities. The plan is to increase the frequency of visits and make them of shorter durations. Satellite communities will be able to feed in for improved access. (3) Support is provided for visiting orthodontic services to Newman and Paraburdoo. : - $13 900 has been allocated for this purpose in 2000/01. Funding allocations to support visiting specialist services in 2001/01 to 2004/05 have not currently been determined. (4) It is planned to review the locations of current visiting dental specialists, the type of specialty treatment they provide, the range of treatment currently provided and to determine if the communities in the North West would benefit from additional visits of the current specialty types or different dental specialties, and at what frequency. The priority is to provide reasonable access to orthodontic services and ensure people can also access oral surgery services where necessary.
