I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
(1)–(5) In
order to accommodate an additional 1.5 million people or a 70 per cent growth
in the region's population, the plan allows for the clearing of about 9
700 hectares of banksia woodland, representing just three per cent of the
coastal plain in the Perth and Peel regions. In stark contrast, to grow to our
current population of 2.1 million people, more than 70 per cent of the Perth
and Peel regions have been cleared. Clearing of just three per cent to
accommodate the region's expected population growth has been made
possible by the avoidance of more than 18 000 hectares of banksia woodland that
was at risk under previous plans for future urban, industrial, rural,
residential and basic raw materials. The draft plan proposes a substantial net
increase in the area of land reserved for conservation purposes in the Perth
and Peel regions. An unprecedented 170 000 hectares of new conservation
reserves will be established in and around the Perth and Peel regions, as well
as through rehabilitation initiatives.
