PUBLIC TRANSPORT
INFRASTRUCTURE
860. Ms E. HAMILTON to the Minister for Transport:
I refer to Infrastructure Australia's
report released last week that found that those living in Perth's outer
suburbs are struggling to access public transport due to a lack of investment
by the previous government. Can the minister advise the house how the McGowan
Labor government is investing in new services and new public transport
infrastructure and addressing the Liberal–National government's
eight-and-a-half-year failure to improve access to transport and to support
those in the outer suburbs?
Mr D.C. Nalder interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Bateman, I call you to order for the first time.

I thank the member for Joondalup for
that question. Yes, the Infrastructure Australia report released last week
outlines things that we know. Basically, we need to keep spending on public
transport infrastructure to match the urban growth in our outer suburbs. It
basically outlined that many people in not only our city, but also cities
around Australia are not close to world-class public transport. It refers to
the disconnection that that means for many people in the community. As part of
our program, we are extending these rail lines into areas of new growth across
the outer suburbs. I know the opposition does not support Metronet. We heard
the Leader of the Opposition say only yesterday that much of Metronet is as
poorly thought out as the Metro Area Express light rail. That is what the
Leader of the Opposition said. I want to know which part of Metronet is poorly
thought out. Is it the Thornlie–Cockburn line? Is it the Byford
extension?
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : Pardon?
Mrs A.K. Hayden : Bring it out
to Byford.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : The member
for Darling Range says, ''Bring it out to Byford'', although the
Leader of the Opposition did warn the member for Darling Range that extending
the rail line would bring crime to Byford. That is what the Leader of the
Opposition said. Is it the Yanchep extension that is poorly thought out? Is it
the Ellenbrook extension that is poorly thought out? Is it the Midland
revitalisation project that is poorly thought out? What part of it is poorly
thought out? In one case, the Leader of the Opposition was trying to slam
Metronet at every opportunity, but then his backbench and the federal Liberal
Party cannot wait to claim credit for parts of Metronet.
Dr D.J. Honey : It's a
broad church.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : It is a broad church!
Metronet is about delivering
world-class public transport to our suburbs all around the metropolitan area
and making sure that people are connected to jobs, education and great health
services.
