CLIMATE CHANGE - ACNIELSEN SURVEY
I refer to a recent ACNielsen survey on climate change that was commissioned by the Australian Wind Energy Association - Auswind - which found that 84 per cent of respondents want stronger action to reduce greenhouse gas pollution levels and that more than 75 per cent would be prepared to pay more for renewable energy. What is the government’s response to these statements? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The government is aware that public concern over greenhouse issues is growing, and it is taking a range of actions to develop appropriate policies, including establishing a greenhouse and energy task force; participating in the National Emissions Trading Taskforce to develop an emissions trading model for consideration by the government; and developing a renewable energy strategy, which will include a target for 2020. Electricity customers are already able to exercise choice and to purchase electricity at a premium from renewable sources via the National Green Power Accreditation Program.
