I thank the member for Eyre for the
question, and I can certainly say that the Liberal–National government
is very keen, and we do, in practice, very strongly support the arts and
cultural activities —
Mr
P.B. Watson : How come you never come to Albany?
The
SPEAKER : Sorry; I made a mistake, member for Albany. It was three, but I will
give you a credit.
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : I would not, Mr Speaker; I think you are excessively tolerant!
However, it is the last day of a three-week sitting, so perhaps we can all have
a little goodwill!
I was saying that the Liberal–National
government is very keen on, and we do in practice very strongly support,
cultural activities and the arts and the creative community in the metropolitan
area and right around Western Australia. Together with the Minister for
Regional Development, I was very pleased to announce last year the $24 million creative
regions program, which is supported by the government's royalties for
regions program, to support the arts in regional parts of Western Australia. In the first year of the program, more than
$3.6 million was provided to regional performing arts venues and arts
organisations for that reason. In particular, the regional and remote touring
fund has been established as part of the overall program to support companies
to take their shows to regional parts of the state so that more Western Australians
can see some of our state's best performing arts productions. We have
been pleased to very recently announce a further range of touring activities as
part of that program, which will be occurring between now and late October.
Most of these events have already been presented in major festivals, including
the Adelaide and Perth fringe festivals, the Perth International Arts Festival
and fringe festivals in Edinburgh and New York. Overall, there will be more
than 200 performances, workshops and community and school activities, which
will help bring culture and arts experiences and activities to a wide regional
audience.
I will mention some of the performances. They include All Aboard the Spinifex Express , which
began touring in the Pilbara in August and included 32 interactive theatre
performances and community participation workshops for babies and children,
families, friends and the wider community; Ochre Contemporary Dance Company's
performance of Kaya , which is touring
Bunbury, Kalgoorlie and Tjuntjuntjara, which is 700 kilometres east of
Kalgoorlie; Suzanne Ingelbrecht's contemporary one-person play The List, which is touring to Mt Barker,
Ravensthorpe and Esperance; Zest and Blues' High Culture on Old Country , which is touring the Shire of
Perenjori and Kalbarri and includes performances by the Perth Symphony
Orchestra, choral music and circus acts; and Tura New Music's
Reflection2 Tour, which was at the Perth Concert Hall last week —
The SPEAKER : Thank you; 10 seconds.
Mr J.H.D. DAY : — and brings together, amongst
others, musical icons Mark Atkins and Stephen Pigram and is touring 21 towns
and communities in the Kimberley; Lockwood Productions' double bill HorseHead and I (honestly) Love You , which
is performing in Geraldton, Esperance, Kalgoorlie and Mandurah —
The SPEAKER : Two seconds.
Mr J.H.D. DAY : —and the West Australian Ballet,
which is taking Quarry on Tour to Bunbury. Many arts
organisations are being supported out of this $24 million fund over four years.
The SPEAKER : That concludes question time.
