DIRECT FLIGHTS — PERTH–JAPAN
187. Mr P. PAPALIA to the Minister for
Tourism:
I have a supplementary question. What exactly does Western
Australia get from the three-year $7.65 million deal with Qantas signed in
September 2013 when Qantas does not even fly international flights through
Perth?

AnswerView source ↗

Just before I left Perth—I am assuming this is what
the member is talking about—we had a significant desire to increase our
interstate numbers. We did not have direct flights coming through Qantas from
somewhere else, but our interstate flights were significantly lower. As part of
our marketing package—remember that we both committed $24 million —
Mrs M.H. Roberts interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Midland, I call you to order for the first time. Right, a quick
answer, please.
Dr K.D. HAMES :
Yes, Mr Speaker. We did a deal with Qantas, largely around interstate, to
increase the number of people coming from the other states to Western
Australia. Qantas has its own agenda and its own direction, and we will
continue to work with it to maximise tourist numbers coming to this state.
