The Labor Party has said that it will commit $100 million over the next four years to construct a road between Karratha and Tom Price, otherwise the member for Burrup - the Speaker - will resign. Page 870 of the 2001-02 Budget Statements contains the budget estimate for 2001-02 and the forward estimates for four years for the construction of that road. The total amount allocated over that four years is $74.8 million. Can the minister indicate how that $74.8 million can be reconciled with the Government’s commitment to spend $100 million in its first term in office; and does that mean the Speaker will have to resign? Hon Ken Travers interjected. Hon TOM STEPHENS

It is important that the interjection of my colleague Hon Ken Travers be made available by way of my response to that question. The PRESIDENT: Order! No, it is not important. Hon TOM STEPHENS: Through this funding commitment, this Government has now delivered to the people of the Pilbara $100 million, over two stages. That is the $100 million that the Opposition promised but did not deliver when in government. We have made the commitment that we will spend $100 million on that road, over two stages. Hon N.F. Moore: You said it would be in four years. The PRESIDENT: Order! It appeared to me that the minister had answered the question. Is that correct? Hon TOM STEPHENS: I would be more than happy to wax lyrical a little longer if that would be of assistance to the Opposition. The PRESIDENT: Order! I believe the minister has answered the question.
