Industrial Hemp Act—Review
1101. Hon Dr Brian Walker to the Minister for
Agriculture and Food:
I thank the minister
for her response to my recent question without notice 842, asked and answered
on Wednesday 15 October, regarding the timing of a potential review of the Industrial Hemp Act 2004 here in Western
Australia, and I note developments since then in Victoria.
(1) Is the government in active discussions with
any other states and territories about their plans around hemp and, if not, why
not?
(2) If yes to (1), can the minister share any
details concerning those discussions at this time?
(3) Will the minister follow Victoria's lead and
ensure that any review held here includes public consultation that invites
Western Australians to share their priorities for this important and growing
industry?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The Department of Primary
Industries and Regional Development is a member of the Australian industrial hemp
regulators network that was formed to provide a forum for governments to
coordinate regulatory efforts and responsibilities for the industry where
appropriate, ensure safe and smooth operation across jurisdictions, promote
risk-based and efficient regulation, discuss emerging regulatory issues, and
monitor regulatory and policy impediments to industry development. As
previously advised on 18 June 2025 and 15 October 2025, a review of the act and
regulations will be considered in the context of other government legislative
priorities.
