I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(2)
The Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention with the Mental Health
Commission, has led to the development of a new suicide prevention strategy.
The council includes representatives from community, corporate and government
organisations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people who
have had experience of suicide in their family.
The development of the Suicide Prevention 2020 Strategy has
been informed by current research and the expertise of members of the
ministerial council as well as consultation with key stakeholders, including
the Department of Education, the Department of Health's Child and
Adolescent Mental Health Service, the Drug and Alcohol Office, the Department
of Health, the Department of Child Protection and Family Support, the
Department of Sport and Recreation and the Department of the Premier and
Cabinet.
Key findings and recommendations
from investigations and evaluations conducted by the Auditor General, the
Ombudsman of Western Australia and Edith Cowan University on the previous
suicide prevention strategy have also been taken into consideration.
Community consultations to help
inform the development of an overarching and an Aboriginal-specific
implementation plan have been held in Kununurra, Broome, Karratha, Geraldton,
Albany, Bunbury and Narrogin. Three metropolitan consultations have also been
held with a further two planned—they have now been completed; this
question was asked in March—for early April.
(3) The
release date of the strategy is yet to be determined. It will be done in
conjunction with the budget.
