89 homicides were reported in Western Australia between 1 February 2001 and 30 September 2002. This statistic includes the offences of murder, attempted murder and manslaughter. Of the 89 reported homicides: a) 73 resulted in arrests; b) 8 are yet to be cleared; and c) 8 were deemed to be cleared by other means (4 deceased were subsequently determined to have died by natural causes or suicide, 1 offender is deceased, 1 offender was below the age of criminal responsibility, and 2 attempted murder complaints were subsequently withdrawn following police investigations). The Police Service has advised that detailed charge and conviction statistics are maintained by the Department of Justice.
