I refer to the $1.5 million funding for the Premier's Science Fellow and the Premier's Early to Mid-Career Fellow, and I ask: (a) can you confirm that the $1.5 million in funding will only support two people over the next four years; (b) is there funding in the forward estimates for future rounds and if so, how much funding is allocated in each year; (c) will the funding be made available to Western Australians or only those people who reside outside of the State; and (d) why won't Western Australian researchers be able to access this funding?

The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation advises:
(a) Yes. The $1.5 million total funding is available through the Premier’s Science Fellowship Program. This is the continuation of previous Western Australian Fellowships Programs (established in 2003), which have brought 12 world-class scientists to the State.
(b) Potential future rounds will be considered by the Department, and be subject to the availability of funding.
(c) As with previous programs, the funding for the Premier’s Science Fellow is available to attract a leading researcher to Western Australia from interstate or overseas, which does not preclude the appointment of an expatriate Western Australian who wishes to return to the State. The Premier’s Early to Mid-Career Fellow can be from Western Australia, interstate or overseas.
(d) Western Australian researchers can access the funding for the Premier’s Early to Mid-Career Fellow. The purpose of the Premier’s Science Fellow funding is to attract an elite researcher to Western Australia, to increase the State’s capabilities and capacities in a strategic area of research.
