ALCOA WORLD ALUMINA AUSTRALIA, WAGERUP HEALTH CONCERNS
I remind the minister of his response to my question without notice on 29 November in which he said he could not act in relation to emissions from Alcoa’s Wagerup plant because “We need further research in this area”. (1) In the light of the report this week from government and private health experts that confirms a link between health problems and plant emissions, will the minister now take action to protect the health of workers and residents? (2) Will the minister support my call as the local member for the closure of the liquor burning plant at Wagerup until alternative measures are taken to reduce the exposure of those people affected? Mr BROWN

(1)-(2) I thank the member for his question. This is a very important issue because it deals with the safety and welfare of employees and the community in his area. I am aware that the member has been very vocal on this matter, as he should be. The matter is being examined and I am expecting some expert advice. It is not simply a question of closing down the liquor burner. I am advised that closing down the liquor burner has significant implications for Alcoa. I am still awaiting some advice on this matter; when I receive that advice I will confer with the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, who also has responsibilities in this area.
