Demersal fishing ban
1265. Hon Rod Caddies to
the Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the
recent decision by the WA Labor government to ban some recreational fishing for
21 months and significantly reduce commercial fishing quotas of iconic WA fish.
(1) Will the minister table all modelling and
reports that informed the decision to reduce the commercial demersal fishing
quotas and ban recreational fishing for 21 months? If not, why not?
(2) Can the minister advise what impact reduced
commercial demersal fishing will have on the WA economy in terms of job losses
and domestic fish prices?
(3) Can the minister assure WA families that they
will still be able to afford their favourite WA fish?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) I refer the member to the
scientific stock assessments that I tabled in this place on 18 September and
listed as tabled papers 602, 603, 604, 605 and 606. Although the price of some
premium fish product like dhufish may increase, the government needed to act
now in response to the latest science to ensure that these fish stocks are
around in the future for all Western Australians to enjoy.
