In relation to the Cristal Global chemical plant in Australind and its approach to the Government to extend its lease for another 25 years, I ask —
(1) Will the Minister seek an independent investigation of the ecological condition of the site prior to the lease being extended?
(2) Will there be a review of the environmental licence conditions to ensure they are appropriate to monitor the current contamination and the remediation efforts of the company?

The Cristal Global chemical plant at Australind is approved under the provisions of the
Pigment Factory (Australind) Agreement Act 1986
administered by the Department of State Development (DSD).
Section 10 of Schedule 1 of the Actrequires the company to keep the Minister for State Development informed in respect of, and report as required on, the measures it has taken, is taking or proposes to take for the monitoring, protection and management of the environment in respect of its operations. The renewal of the lease and the conditions that might apply is a matter for DSD and the Minister for State Development.
(1-2) The current operating licence for the plant, issued under the
Environmental Protection Act 1986,
expires on 15 November 2014. A review of the licence conditions will be undertaken before a new licence is issued.
