In 2012-13 $39,050,363 and in 2013-14 $50,879,934 has been allocated through individual funding packages for family support and respite. These funding packages enable families to purchase services that best support them in their caring role. Individuals and their family select an organisation once they have a package of funding.
Twelve disability sector organisations have 'block' funding specifically to provide residential respite and/or respite programs (2012-13 budget allocated - $32,920,592; 2013-14 - $31,472,849). Waiting lists are maintained by some but not all providers and people may be listed with more than one provider. Also, some people may be seeking an increase to the respite they currently have.
In 2012-13 and 2013-14 a total of $71,970,955 and $82,352,783 respectively has been allocated for respite and family support.
A central database is not maintained and therefore it is not possible to provide accurate and reliable figures of people 'waiting for' respite services
The direction for the future allocation of funding to meet people's needs is through individual funding packages that will be regularly reviewed and revised to meet reasonable and necessary needs.
